“Before the start of the II European Games, they planned to perform no worse than in Baku in 2015 (43 medals), and as a result, the performance of the Belarusian athletes exceeded the expectations of our fans and our plans,” Vyacheslav Durnov said. “Many sports have become medal for the Belarusian team With the exception of individual: badminton, table tennis. Following the results of the II European Games, Belarusian athletes won two licenses for the Olympic Games in Tokyo: Yuri Shcherbatsevich in shooting and Tatiana Kholodovich in javelin throwing. "
The First Deputy Minister of Sport and Tourism also thanked the Directorate of the European Games, the ministries and departments that were involved in preparing and holding such a large-scale sports forum.
The past European Games, according to Vyacheslav Durnov, had a positive effect on the influx of tourists. “The guests liked our sports facilities. For example, one of the largest Russian banks is already considering the possibility of holding a corporate sports festival in Minsk, which is more than 3 thousand participants,” the first deputy minister stressed.
Following the results of the games, Belarusian athletes were among the leaders of European and world sports, winning 69 medals: 24 gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze. The host team at the sports forum was represented by 221 athletes.
II European Games were held in Minsk from 21 to 30 June. 4 thousand athletes from 50 states competed in 15 sports. The official motto of the games is Bright Year, Bright You ("Bright Year, Bright You"). The logo is "paparats-kvetka" (fern flower), carrying a symbolic meaning in the culture of the Slavs. The mascot of the games was made by a fox named Lesik.
